Smiles For Kids

In 2002, we started sending these smiley face cookies to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for kids who are dealing with serious illnesses. In 2016, we added Seattle Children’s Hospital. As of 2017, we have given away more than 41,000 cookies! Our hope is that this little yellow smiley treat might give these kiddos and their families a bit of joy in the midst of some very serious, life-changing situations.

Here is a letter from Jeff J. that touched our hearts and made our efforts more than worthwhile:

My name is Jeff J. I have a 9 year old daughter who has spent years (on and off) in the hospital at Seattle Children’s Hospital since she was 6 years old due to a brain tumor. She now can’t walk, talk, or see, along with other issues.

My family and I have spent years of our lives in hospitals because of this cancer. I just wanted to thank you for what you do with the cookies you generously donate to Seattle Children’s Hospital. My daughter can’t take advantage of your cookies since she is no longer able to chew and swallow, but my wife and I have had your cookies now and then when they are available on the coffee cart run by volunteers at the hospital.

I meant to contact you months ago to thank you, but we have been very busy with 24/7 care of our daughter. These cookies are incredibly delightful and I have looked forward to them (more like addicted to lol) when we make our visits to the coffee cart. I am a man of few words and just wanted to let you know your cookies and generosity are greatly appreciated! THANK YOU AND YOUR EMPLOYEES for what you are doing for the children and families here at the hospital!!!”

We were blown away and humbled by Jeff’s letter, and now we are delighted to introduce…Smiles For Kids. These cookies are now available to purchase in stores and coffee shops in and around Portland and Seattle, and we will donate half of the profits to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland and Seattle Children’s Hospital in Seattle. Of course, the kids at Doernbecher’s and Seattle Children’s will continue to see their weekly delivery!

OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital   ranks among the nation’s Best Children’s Hospitals.

Nationally recognized physicians and nurses provide a full range of specialty and subspecialty care to tens of thousands of children annually, resulting in 200,000 discharges, surgeries, transports and outpatient visits annually in a patient- and family-centered environment.

OHSU Doernbecher providers also travel throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington, providing specialty care to more than 3,000 children at more than 200 outreach clinics in 15 locations.

Using state-of-the-art, secure two-way video and audio communication, OHSU Doernbecher’s Telemedicine Network connects pediatric intensivists and neonatologists to emergency room physicians statewide to help evaluate time-critical pediatric patient needs and assist with treatment plans.

We are united by a compelling mission: We provide hope, care and cures to help every child live the healthiest and most fulfilling life possible.

For more than 100 years, Seattle Children’s Hospital has specialized in meeting the unique physical, emotional and developmental needs of children from infancy through young adulthood.

Through the collaboration of physicians in nearly 60 pediatric subspecialties, we provide inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, surgical, rehabilitative, behavioral, emergency and outreach services – regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

Together, we deliver superior patient care, advance new discoveries and treatments through pediatric research and serve as the pediatric and adolescent academic medical center for Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho – the largest region of any children’s hospital in the country. In 2016, U.S. News & World Report ranked Seattle Children’s No. 1 west of the Rocky Mountains – and No. 5 in the country overall – again placing us among the nation’s top children’s hospitals.
